On behalf of the Acadiana Black Nurses Association (ABNA), we are pleased to forward you the scholarship/stipend application. One of ABNA’s major initiative is to provide nursing students an opportunity to obtain financial assistance to help in achieving their goal in completing their nursing program. This financial assistance is open to all nursing students in the Acadiana Region.

Scholarship/stipends will be awarded this year.  All applicants must meet the criteria outlined in the application under the “criteria” section.

Please note that all applications submitted must have the following supporting documentation in order to be considered by the Scholarship Committee:

  1. The Criteria Application with all items checked and original signature
  2. The Community service form
  3. The Biosketch/personal statement completed form
  4. The Reference Form (2 supporting letters)
  5. Letter of proof from school official on school letterhead (i.e instructor, advisor) stating eligibility to sit for NCLEX exam from an accredited school of nursing.
  6. Unofficial copy of transcript (official copy maybe requested)

All applicants must adhere to postmarked date to be announced by ABNA during time of application campaign.

Rebecca Harris Smith (RHS) stipened award is reserved for the LPN student whose profiles mirrors those of the ideals of Dr Rebecca Harris Smith- service, academia, perseverance, and demonstrates an explicit desire to further his/her educational level in nursing. Dr. Harris-Smith, launched her nursing career as an LPN during high school. Rebecca earned a Doctor of Education Degree in Higher Education Leadership, Nova Southeastern University Fort Lauderdale, FL; Master of Science in Nursing Degree, University of Phoenix, New Orleans, LA.    In her former role as Dean of Southwest Louisiana Community College, Dr. Harris-Smith submitted a proposal and received approval from the Louisiana State Nurses Association for the LPN to RN Transition Program.

Enrica Kinchen Singleton (EKS) Scholarship fund named in honor of Dr. Enrica Kinchen Singleton, the first African American nurse from Acadiana achieving doctoral status in a health- related area. During a span of over fifty years in nursing, Dr Singleton served in multiple roles in nursing- service, academia, research, consulting, and spiritual leadership. Her activities in service and academia exemplified those characters of scholarship, practice, leadership and service.  Since 2013, the EKS scholarship has awarded scholarships to ABNA RN student members whose academic and community profiles mirrored that of the EKS criteria-academics, service and leadership.
